Auction Wally, aka Walt Kolenda brought his own concept of a live online auction to Bonanzle.com over the weekend. Kolenda is a licensed auctioneer with 25 years experience in the antiques and collectibles venue. He has been selling online for many years in the traditional venues, and came up with the concept of a live auction online after using the new ecommerce venue Bonanzle.com.
One of the unique features of Bonanzle.com is the live chat board available to sellers while logged into the site. This allows interaction between buyers and sellers,,,,,hmmm what a unique concept.
Anyway, using this feature on Bonanzle in conjuction with live audio available with Talkshoe.com, Wally was able to actually call bids just like in a real live auction, as these bids were placed by bidders in the Bonanzle chat board. This allowed Walt to use the chant and banter live auctioneers use while doing this all online.
While there admittedly were some glitches and lags, Walt auctioned about 17 items in about 2 hours. While this number is much lower than would be seen in a real live auction, it was certainly fun and entertaining! I am not sure exactly how many bidders were involved, but the chat room in Walt’s booth on Bonanzle seemed to have plenty of bidders, and the Talkshoe chat room had a significant number of listeners as well. Prices realized for the items auctioned were probably less than would have been seen at a live in person event with the exception of the advertising spots Walt offered on his podcasts which brought very good prices.
Walt announced he intends to continue these sales on the first Saturday of every month with the next one scheduled for February 7th, 2009 at 1:00 PM ET.
I love the concept of this type of promotion and wish Walt continued success. Time will tell whether the bidders like the idea well enough to continue but I think he has a hit!
