Full News Day

Wow it really has been a full news day! As announced by eBay, today eBay Stores items now appear in the normal “core search” for eBay buyers. Until this point there had been several different attempts to bring the items sellers listed in their eBay Stores in the main search engine on the site, or added to the bottom of a search page if there was room or lack of the searched for items in the normal eBay site. This however was not a truly viable way for store owners to get their items seen. This is one of the biggest changes of the most recently announced eBay ERS’s or eBay Seller Release. It is a was much needed and the store owners I have talked to are nearly 100% for this improvement. There are of course other changes and they can all be found in the eBay Announcements page.

Bonanzle MeetUp

Today Bonanzle.com announced that they will be conducting their second Bonanzle Meetup again in Seattle, WA the websites home base. The first MeetUp held last year drew a small but enthusiastic group of users. As the site continues to grow, I am sure this MeetUp will garner more attention and certainly more attendees. The supporters of the site welcomed the news with Tweets and Facebook posts all morning. Scheduled for May 15th, it is sure to grow a crowd!

Bye Bye Kijiji

In about March of 2005 eBay bought controlling interest in a group of classified sites they called Kijiji. Unfortunately Kijiji never gained much traction in the classified marketplace. Today eBay announced that Kijiji has been rebranded and overhauled to become eBayClassifieds. The new look and feel of the site impressed me and I think it might have a chance this time. The reasoning behind my thought is that it provides small non business sellers another venue under the eBay name.

Classified Sites-Is This The Grand Plan of eBay?

Maybe There Is A Plan?

Vendio.com rolled out their new platform earlier this year and yesterday Auctiva.com announced that beginning in July they would begin charging for services that were previously free. Both of these providers have made these changes based in part or in whole by the changes online marketplace eBay has implemented or announced.

SMB’s (Small and Medium Business) are working very hard to cope with todays economic climate as well as changes in the ecommerce marketplace. Now I know that change and evolution is constant, however some of these changes might have a hidden agenda.

Remember when the then newly appointed eBay CEO John Donahoe, in answering the question as to whether sellers would be happy about the changes eBay announced in January 2008 made the following statement:

So we have a very clear priority and focus in the coming year to improve the buyers experience on eBay because we think that’s good for our sellers and that is good for eBay. And so we put the words out there, we are backing up our words with action, and yes, is there going to be some noise along the way? There is. (source Auctionbytes)

There have also been statements attributed to eBay executives as to wanting to change eBay’s image of being an online yardsale.

Couple these with the changes implemented by eBay and some believe (this author included) that eBay is moving towards an online discount retail site. This is evidenced by the incentives offered to attract large volume consumable sellers to the marketplace. All of these moves including the most recent “Bucket” of announced eBay changes and the ripple effects they are causing throughout the third party eBay providers community may be a plan.

With the increased fees associated with SMB’s selling both on the eBay site and the fees associated with using services such as Vendio and Auctiva, is it becoming cost prohibitive for low volume sellers to continue?

Is this really the grand plan at eBay? Make selling the yardsale type items so cost prohibitive that sellers will leave the site? And if these sellers leave, where are they going?

Well one segment of the ecommerce marketplace that is growing is the online classified sites such as Craigslist, Oodle and Kijiji among others. These venues have seen a significant growth in recent months and it begs the question, is this actually eBay’s plan? Afterall they own a portion of Craigslist and all of Kijiji plus other classified sites around the world.

Certainly something to ponder! What do you think?

Why I Won’t Use Craigslist Again To Sell Online

It Seemed So Easy

While many internet marketers are searching for viable venues to expand their presence some are moving to Craigslist for help. It seems easy and smart. Cragislist is an online classified marketplace, and is free to use. What could be more simple?

I decided to give it a try. There must be something to the popularity of using the site. So I placed an ad for one of the advertising spots I offer for the ebay & Beyond: Basics To Business radio program. Again, very simple and easy. Very generic, no glitz or glamour. OK, I can deal with this.

The Flood Gates Open

My listing had been up for no more than 24 hours when the flood of emails began.

I saw your listing on Craigslist. I hope you do well with it, but if you want more exposure we can help.

Some were simple, some very elaborate like this one.

The flood continued for months! Hundreds of emails, no matter what I did to my Spam filters.

I wrote a blog entitled Stop The Insanity on my Ecommerce-Marketing-Radio-Network site regarding the huge number of get rich quick scams. This is just an extension of that thought process.

Why Is It Allowed To Happen

In full disclosure, I have attempted to contact Craigslist over the past 5 months for comment or an interview without success. My requests have gone unanswered.

I want to know how my email address is obtained, and why! Why does Craigslist not work harder to prevent this! Based on the number of scam emails I received from this one listing, I will not use the site again for attempting to sell something. A very good friend of mine John ”ColderIce” Lawson recently noted Free is not always a good thing. I tend to agree in this situation.
