As 2009 rapidly approaches ecommerce sellers should, in my mind, be considering their current positions. What to sell and more importantly where to sell are the top 2 questions they need to be asking themselves. In this post, I would like to address the second question. Where to sell.
In almost all the forums I read, on nearly every blog, the top question I see is which of the up and coming marketing venues is worth our time and effort. Is anyone selling anything on these sites? The answer is no site has the traction that Amazon and eBay have. The reason? It’s your fault.
In my humble opinion ecommerce sellers have become lazy. They have been lulled into laziness by the huge amounts of buying traffic these two sites have been able to provide sellers. I compare this to the crack dealer that gives out samples to get you hooked, then you become dependent on them for your habit!
The truth is if we as ecommerce sellers continue to sell only on the highest volume traffic sites, we will remain addicted to them. We will remain under THEIR CONTROL!
There are many new as well as older marketing venues that could succeed if we as ecommerce sellers want them to. We have the control. Whether or not we take up the challenge is the question. We have the product that buyers want. We can make or break any marketing venue.
Amazon and eBay are not bad businesses. They have provided hundreds of thousands of ecommerce sellers a fantastic way to earn a living. Each has their own specific good and bad points. The problem is that unless we as ecommerce sellers are willing to support other marketing venues by word of mouth promotion, talking them up on blogs and websites, list product on the sites, tell OUR customers where we are also selling, they will not survive.
It is not just a matter of which venue has the cash to advertise. They can advertise till they are broke, but if they don’t have the product, buyers will not come. It’s not just about Google, Yahoo or MSN search or feeds. SEO is a great tool, but so is organic traffic. I believe that organic, grass roots marketing is still very effective.
If you as an ecommerce marketer want to regain the CONTROL of your business and BREAK THE ADDICTION, you must take the effort to help promote the site that best fits your business model. If you don’t, your addiction will kill your business.

This is wonderful – you said it so well. One of the big problems is – everyone can talk about it – how many actually DO something about it? For example – blogs – how many sellers are actively blogging? There’s lots of them out there but are just sitting there with no new posts after months. Thanks for the advice!! Just as soon as Christmas has past – I’ll redouble my efforts & blog & link & feature product, etc. Happy Holidays!!

I understand sales may be less than optimal on these venues. The question is what are YOU doing to promote your items on these sites?
