How Come I’m In Trouble? Johnny Did It Too!!! It’s Time To Worry About YOUR Business

It’s Time To Be Responsible For YOU

The economic world is in turmoil! Stocks are crashing, businesses are folding, people are losing their HOMES! Do you as a business owner have the time to be worrying about what others are doing or have done?

In some instances yes, you as a business owner do need to worry about what other businesses are doing. If it is the competition, you certainly need to be aware.

If you are in certain types of business such as media or journalism, you need to know what is going on in your focus world so you can report on it to your outlets.

My question is this: Do you as a business owner REALLY have time to worry about whether or not other businesses are being ethical, treating their customers fairly or simply doing the right thing?

When I hear businesses owners talking about what other businesses have done to them I see red!

As the oldest of 12 children in my family, I vividly remember hearing one of  my many siblings (on many occassions) when caught doing something they shouldn’t have, exhort: But Mom, do you know what David (or one of my brothers and sisters, whoever was nearest at the time) did?

I am sure most of my readers and listeners can relate to the above!

Recently I have been involved in situation where a “professional” did something that I viewed as less than professional. In response to the concern I voiced about this action I received numerous emails from this person telling me all the “nasty” things that other people and companies had done in the past. The emails went on to ask why I wasn’t upset with these people?

Because you are a professional and I expect better!

The point of this rant is this: No person or business is to blame for what you do with YOUR business. Whether it is the changes made by another business you do business with or actions these other businesses take, the bottom line is YOU must take responsibility for YOUR actions!

The Answer Is No!

Responsibility….isn’t that a dirty word that is only spoken in whispers now? LOL…

Napoleon Hill stated that “No alibi will save you from accepting the responsibility.”

I tend to believe that if you can’t own up to your own words and actions then you shouldn’t be producing them.

That’s just my two cents on the subject.

    Thanks for a great post!

    Great Point Dave!

I worry about my own business and that of my clients… Sure we all have pet peeves and ideological differences with what this company or that does or says, but why waste time airing them in public, or for that matter worrying about them at all.

Our own business success is directly related to how we are perceived in the world. If we are perceived as a sniveling whining brat – well… no one likes a complainer and tattle tale. And really, why does anyone want to associate with a business or a person who may just turn and do the same thing to you in the future?

Hand in the cookie jar, great analogy and good lesson…

    Thanks for the sage perspective!
