Is eCommerce in 2009 Astrology, Ouija Board or Common Sense? Part Deux

I Promised To Continue!

Yesterday was New Years Day, January 1, 2009 and I posted a partial list of my thoughts on steps I will take in the coming year to increase my ecommerce business. Remember, these are steps I am taking and some or all may not work for you.

Part One of this post spoke about 6 of the steps I plan on taking to make my ecommerce business more vibrant and stable in 2009.

Many times when I speak with listeners of my radio program or at conferences, the topic of how they make business decisions comes up. Now before you ask, yes I have had people tell me they look to their horoscope to make those decisions. While this may work for them, and I certainly would not speak ill of the stars, it certainly is not one of the more accepted practices. I have also had responses that indicated the use of tools like a Ouija Board or and 8 Ball to direct their business.

While I encourage thinking outside the “Box” in creative business development, I prefer the Common Sense approach to doing this. Taking steps that may be a bit unconventional but still in the realm of the dimension in which we live. So, having said that let’s continue.

7. Explore Social Network Media such as Twitter, Squidoo, LinkedIn, YouTube and others. I currently use these venues as well as FaceBook and on a limited level MySpace. Twitter has been the most useful so far but I am getting more familiar with the rest. One thing to remember to avoid is Anti-Socical Network Marketing which entails constant postings of the items you sell and not contributing to the content of the site. Many users find this offensive and will remove you from their lists.

8. Blogging is an important way to generate attention to your products and website if you post regularly and with good pertinent content. I have been lax in this and will be more dedicated in the coming year.

9. Network, Network, Network! Join internet as well as local and national groups that enlarge your business network. While this can become overwhelming if you let it, prudent use can be very helpful in business synergy and brainstorming of ideas. Associations like Ecommerce Merchants can be beneficial in the sharing of ideas and strategies along with providing group discounts for business tools etc.

10. Find a Mentor! In today’s technology there are plenty of ways to find a mentor that can provide you with information that you may not be able to find on your own. Internet radio is a great way to do this. While this may seem very self promotional on my part, there are many great internet radio talk programs available today both live and available as podcasts. Below you will find just a partial list of the programs I recommend:

Agents of Revenue

Auction Wally

Brainstorming Bonanzle

ColderIce

PowerSellingMom

Tips From The Top

11. Be nimble in your business. Ideas for change come at the strangest times and in the strangest ways. Be open to new ideas and be prepared in your mind and business to implement these new ideas quickly to capture the moment. I am not recommending immediate and complete changes in course, but rather the concept that change is constant and we as business owners need to do this to survive.

These are a few of my thoughts for the coming year. Please remember that it is up to us to make our business successful. No one is going to do it for us. We are responsible.

Make it a GREAT New Year!

Wow! What a great 2 part blog post! I am really worried about the state of ebay so I need to try new things. Social Networking is big on my list along with close attention to the new sites gaining traction. I don’t have time to maintain my own blog so will be working on guest posts.

I will definitely be checking out the radio sites you have listed along with your own.

    Cheers!
