PESA Releases White Paper on eBay’s Eroding Marketplace

  September 30, 2008

PESA the Professional eBay Sellers Alliance has released a position paper on the status of ecommerce on eBay. In the paper PESA is apparently hearing and listening to it’s members who are moving to other venues in an effort to find better return on their investment for the cost of doing business online.

Too Much Change To Quick

eBay has made multiple radical changes over the past 12 months and these changes have affected sellers adversely in many cases. eBay’s foundation is the small to medium size seller and it seems that they (eBay) has moved beyond those sellers, instead embracing and enabling the large sellers to dominate the marketplace. I have for years been critical of the eBay policies that give unfair advantage to high volume sellers. I understand the volume sellers want and actually deserve price breaks based on volume, however maybe eBay is not the proper venue for these types of sellers. In my opinion it was a mistake for eBay to allow these sellers on the traditional eBay site.

The current management team at eBay is not relating to the real customers of the site, the sellers. The momumental changes have been more focused on the buyer experience, and quite frankly the buyer experience was working. The buyers started leaving when eBay went big box.

With all these changes eBay management broke it and now they don’t have a clue how to put it all back together. Sort of like Humpty Dumpty.

Personally, I think the policy changes at eBay are great. But then, I might be a little biased, since I’m running the startup that has been taking disgruntled buyers and sellers from eBay hand over fist. :)

If you or any of the other readers are looking for a better marketplace choice that, as Randy Smythe says, “Has found the Soul of eBay” and “makes shopping fun” (http://rksmythe.blogspot.com/2008/09/you-can-find-ebays-soul-at-bonanzlecom.html#links) then check us out!
